Manchester City have signed Enzo Fernández from Chelsea on a five-year contract, the Premier League clubs have confirmed. The agreement keeps the Argentina midfielder at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031.
Neither club disclosed the transfer fee. Fernández becomes part of a reshaped City squad under head coach Enzo Maresca and will wear the No. 17 shirt, previously worn by Kevin De Bruyne.
The 25-year-old said joining City offered him the chance to compete for major trophies and continue improving. City director of football Hugo Viana described him as a complete midfielder whose technical quality, work rate and experience would strengthen the team.
Fernández leaves Chelsea after three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea said he made 170 appearances and scored 31 goals following his arrival from Benfica, while winning the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
His final full season in west London was also his most productive. City recorded 15 goals and seven assists across 54 appearances in 2025/26, when Fernández regularly carried leadership responsibility in Chelsea’s midfield.
The midfielder has already won the World Cup and Copa América with Argentina. He also appeared in the 2026 World Cup final and arrives in Manchester with experience in Argentina, Portugal and the Premier League.
Fernández is now expected to join City’s first-team preparations ahead of their next league fixture. The club have not announced whether he will make his debut this weekend.
Transfer details
City confirmed that Fernández has signed through the end of the 2030/31 season. The midfielder joins fellow deadline-day arrival Iliman Ndiaye as part of a summer that also brought Elliot Anderson, Gerónimo Rulli and Ayyoub Bouaddi into the senior squad.
Chelsea’s departure statement classified the move as a permanent transfer. Both clubs left the fee out of their announcements, so Score808 is not treating reported valuations as confirmed terms.
Career record
Fernández developed at River Plate and won continental honours during a loan with Defensa y Justicia before returning to help River win the Argentine league. A short but influential spell at Benfica preceded his move to Chelsea.
His international breakthrough came during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory, when he received the tournament’s young player award. He later added the 2024 Copa América to an honours list that spans South America, Portugal and England.
What happens next
The No. 17 shirt places Fernández in a central group that must control possession, protect transitions and support City’s forwards. His experience in deeper and more advanced midfield roles gives Maresca several options once the player is fully integrated.
A debut depends on registration, fitness and the manager’s selection. City’s official announcement stopped short of guaranteeing that Fernández will be involved in the next matchday squad.
