Celtic have completed the permanent signing of Joël van den Berg from PSV, the clubs have confirmed. PSV said the 19-year-old midfielder has agreed a four-season contract with an option for a further year.
The financial terms of the transfer were not disclosed. Celtic announced the move on Wednesday evening as the Scottish champions continued to add to their first-team squad after the close of the main English transfer window.
Van den Berg thanked PSV’s staff, supporters and teammates in the Dutch club’s departure statement. He said his time in Eindhoven helped him make important progress as both a player and a person.
The midfielder joined PSV from Vitesse’s youth academy in the summer of 2023. He established himself with PSV’s under-21 side before making six official appearances for the senior team.
His move gives Celtic another young central option who can continue developing around the first team. The club’s announcement did not identify a squad number or specify his immediate selection status.
Van den Berg arrives during a busy period for Celtic, with domestic league fixtures followed by the opening phase of their European campaign. His first training sessions will give the coaching staff an opportunity to assess how quickly he can be integrated.
Celtic have not yet announced a possible debut date. Registration and the club’s matchday plans will determine when he is first included in the squad.
Transfer details
PSV said Van den Berg agreed a four-season contract that also gives Celtic an option for one additional year. Neither club included the transfer fee in its official announcement.
Celtic published the signing shortly after their league win over Aberdeen. The timing means the midfielder arrives with the domestic season under way and European fixtures approaching.
Career to date
Van den Berg moved from Vitesse’s academy to PSV in 2023 and became a regular for the Eindhoven club’s under-21 team. PSV recorded six competitive senior appearances before his transfer to Scotland.
The move is his first permanent step outside Dutch football. Celtic gain a youth international with first-team exposure, while Van den Berg receives a route into a senior squad competing for domestic honours and in Europe.
What happens next
The midfielder will begin training with Celtic and compete for selection once his registration is complete. The club have not yet confirmed his shirt number or the exact role planned for his first weeks in Glasgow.
His integration is likely to be judged through training before any debut decision. Celtic’s announcement did not promise immediate involvement in the next domestic fixture.
